He highlighted several issues both positive and negative, but focused on the need to build a positive relationship between local, Scottish and UK levels of Government.
His speech recorded several issues where SNP politicians had focused on grievance and making political points rather than getting on with the job.
The SNP responded with their lead spokesman, Tommy Sheppard MP insisting that MPs had no right to hold the Scottish Government to account on their use of devolved powers.
They refused to accept that there were any problems in Scotland and their MPs spent much of the debate trying to shout down Stephen for raising the issue. It was clear that they were aggressively afraid of scrutiny of their record in Government.
Stephen cited the Stirling City Deal as an example of how local, Scottish and UK government could work together with a positive approach to make life better for the people of Stirling. Despite this, the SNP continued to shout down his argument.
“As we have come to expect from the SNP they run scared of scrutiny of their atrocious record in Government. Their appalling record makes them want to hide from the spotlight and resort to cheap tactics and turning a reasonable debate into a shouting match. Nothing seems to change. My purpose in bringing the debate forward was to highlight the need for all levels of Government to come together to improve life for Scotland and all we got from the SNP was cheap jibes and heckling. I will always fight to make sure that Stirling’s voice is heard in Parliament. I won’t shy away from this and Stirling’s voice will always be heard in Westminster, even if I have to shout over childish SNP heckling.”
